The Power of a Community That Builds, Connects, and Transforms U.S. Grocery Retail

    By Daniel Esteban Novoa
Co-Founder & Executive Vice President — The Hispanic Retail Chamber of Commerce

More Than a Celebration: A Business, Economic, and Social Force

Today, September 15, the United States begins Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration that recognizes the history, culture, contributions, and legacy of the millions of Hispanics who are an essential part of this nation’s identity and development.

But for those of us who work every day alongside entrepreneurs, supermarkets, suppliers, employees, and communities, this occasion represents much more than a commemoration.

It is an opportunity to recognize the power of a community that produces, invests, creates jobs, innovates, supplies, and builds the future.

Grocery retail is one of the industries where this reality is most visible. In every store, on every shelf, in every distribution center, and in every purchasing decision, there is a story of hard work, entrepreneurial vision, and commitment to American families.

Hispanic supermarkets are not simply points of sale. They are businesses that create jobs, support local economies, preserve traditions, bring products and flavors to millions of consumers, and build bridges between cultures, markets, and opportunities.

Behind this ecosystem stands a business community that deserves to be heard, represented, and supported with concrete tools for growth.

HRCOC: A Platform for Representation, Connection, and Action

In this context, The Hispanic Retail Chamber of Commerce (HRCOC) embraces a clear commitment: to contribute to the strength of the U.S. grocery retail industry and create meaningful opportunities for the entrepreneurs, suppliers, and professionals who are part of it.

HRCOC was founded with a vision of Hispanic business representation and continues to evolve into a national platform connecting Hispanic and non-Hispanic supermarkets, suppliers, manufacturers, service providers, institutions, and strategic partners.

Our mission is not simply to bring companies together or facilitate introductions.

Our mission is to structure opportunities, build valuable relationships, and turn business connections into results.

HRCOC works to help supermarkets access better solutions, pursue new business opportunities, strengthen negotiations, adopt innovation, improve operations, develop talent, and discover new paths to growth.

At the same time, we seek to help suppliers and companies interested in participating in the U.S. market understand the real needs of grocery retailers and engage with a serious, professional, and results-oriented ecosystem.

Our community needs more than visibility. It needs access, knowledge, representation, tools, and opportunity.

That is the role HRCOC is committed to fulfilling.

A Board Committed to an Industry in Transformation

The strength of an institution is also measured by the caliber of the people and organizations that commit to its purpose.

Our Board and leadership structure bring together business experience, market knowledge, strategic vision, and a genuine willingness to contribute to the development of the industry.

The participation of leading companies, business leaders, and industry stakeholders reflects the breadth and reach that HRCOC has developed within the grocery retail ecosystem. Its growing ability to bring key stakeholders together facilitates strategic conversations, builds partnerships, and creates new opportunities among supermarkets, suppliers, manufacturers, institutions, and other critical players across the industry.

This evolution demonstrates that HRCOC is becoming a strategic connector for the U.S. grocery retail industry, driven by a vision focused on creating value, strengthening the industry, and turning relationships into meaningful business opportunities.

Our Board carries a responsibility that we take seriously: to listen to business owners, understand their challenges, and work to ensure that business representation translates into solutions.

Because the future of retail cannot be built by one sector alone.

It is built when supermarkets, suppliers, manufacturers, institutions, professionals, and communities work together around a shared vision.

Serving the Community: From Words to Action

HRCOC’s commitment to the community is reflected in initiatives designed to strengthen the business and human capabilities of the industry.

Through its programs and divisions, the Chamber advances opportunities related to business development, supplier access, executive education, innovation, market intelligence, supermarket services, talent development, and specialized communications.

The Retail Academy, through its academic alliance with Tecnológico de Monterrey, reflects our belief that knowledge and education are essential tools for building stronger leaders and more competitive organizations.

Our initiatives in modernization, technology, artificial intelligence, operational efficiency, and workforce development respond to a clear reality: supermarkets must evolve to meet new challenges, and that evolution must be supported by people, knowledge, and the right solutions.

At HRCOC, we believe that serving the business community means helping create the conditions for companies to grow, workers to find opportunities for development, and future generations to gain the tools they need to lead.

This is not simply about celebrating what the Hispanic community has achieved. It is about contributing to what it can still achieve.

The Supermarket as a Meeting Point for the Americas

U.S. grocery retail is also a space for economic and cultural integration.

On its shelves, producers, brands, distributors, entrepreneurs, and consumers from many backgrounds come together. Tradition and innovation, cultural identity and emerging consumer trends, family-owned businesses and large corporate enterprises all meet within this industry.

HRCOC recognizes that diversity as a strength.

Our vision is to build bridges between the different markets and stakeholders that shape the industry, promoting relationships based on trust, professionalism, and the creation of opportunity.

We want Hispanic business owners to have greater access to the conversations shaping the future of retail. We want suppliers to better understand the needs of supermarkets. We want institutions and strategic partners to find in HRCOC a trusted and capable counterpart.

And we want every opportunity for collaboration to contribute to strengthening an industry that is essential to the daily lives of millions of American families.

Diario Retail: Information That Connects and Provides Strategic Direction

Within this mission, Diario Retail, the specialized media platform within our ecosystem, plays a fundamental role.

Reporting on grocery retail means more than communicating news. It means identifying trends, interpreting decisions, highlighting key players, and providing knowledge that enables industry leaders to act with greater clarity.

During Hispanic Heritage Month, Diario Retail is opening a dedicated space to recognize the people behind the businesses, shelves, and operations that sustain U.S. grocery retail.

We want to tell their stories, showcase their challenges, highlight their innovations, and give visibility to their contributions.

Because those who are not seen may be overlooked, but those who are understood can become part of a strategic conversation.

Diario Retail is not only reporting on the present. It is helping shape the future of grocery retail.

    Our Commitment to the Future

At HRCOC, we reaffirm our commitment to the entrepreneurs, workers, suppliers, professionals, and communities that make up this industry.

We will continue working to expand opportunities for connection, strengthen business representation, promote knowledge, advance innovation, and develop initiatives that contribute to the sustainable growth of grocery retail.

We understand that the challenges are significant. Technological transformation, competition, talent development, operational efficiency, and changing consumer expectations require institutions with vision, the ability to bring stakeholders together, and a strong sense of responsibility.

HRCOC is prepared to embrace that responsibility.

With an increasingly connected business community. With a committed Board. With strategic partners who share our vision. With initiatives designed to turn ideas into action.

And with the conviction that the future is built by working together.

    Hispanic Heritage Month 2026

Today, we celebrate our roots, our history, and our contributions.

    But we also look ahead.

Because Hispanic heritage is not only what we inherit from previous generations. It is also what we build for the generations to come.

We are part of the present. We are shaping the future. And together, we have the ability to transform U.S. grocery retail.

At The Hispanic Retail Chamber of Commerce, we reaffirm our commitment to represent, connect, serve, and create opportunity.

At Diario Retail, we embrace the responsibility to inform, provide visibility, and deliver strategic direction.

And from every supermarket, every company, every supplier, and every community, we continue building a story that deserves to be recognized.

    Happy Hispanic Heritage Month.
