Regional grocery chain Giant Food is opening a new store in Silver Spring, Md., on Friday, replacing an older location about nine miles away, the retailer announced Tuesday.
The new store is nearly 65,000-square feet and has an expanded gourmet cheese department, fresh-made sushi and pizza, and a Starbucks café.
«Giant Food has been serving the Silver Spring community since 1958 and we are pleased to bring this new store that will provide a fresh space for everyone to enjoy,» said Ira Kress, President of Giant Food. «The new store is designed to bring the best products and value to the community while continuing to offer top-notch service to new and existing customers.»
The Silver Spring store replaces the Giant Food location in Beltsville, Md., the company said. The new market opens the day after the old one closes so customers won’t experience an interruption in service, the Landover, Md.-based retailer said.
Giant Food, an Ahold Delhauze brand, was founded in Washinton, D.C., in 1936 and now operates 164 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
The new supermarket has a full-service pharmacy and offers pickup and delivery through Giant Food’s app and website. The retailer also offers local produce boxes for delivery.
The Silver Spring store is hiring 100 workers.
Giant Food recently held re-openings at three stores across Maryland and Virginia.
