History of Black Friday
The term Black Friday refers to the “financial panic” that occurred in 1869, when investors Jay Gould and Jim Fisk caused the price of gold to rise and, as a result, the stock market in the United States to collapse.
The modern use of the term dates back to the 1950s, when the massive purchases that were made after Thanksgiving became popular.
As the story goes, the Philadelphia police complained about the large number of people in the city who were out shopping for the holiday. It was these authorities who in the 1950s gave the event a negative connotation, but over the years, it became something positive for the United States economy.
Between 1970 and 1980, the idea of linking end-of-year shopping with the name Black Friday gained popularity until it became what it is known today thanks to the competition between retailers and their desire to sell more at better prices.
This year, the famous Black Friday will take place on Friday, November 29, the day after Thanksgiving. However, the economic boom for Americans is expected to begin earlier and extend throughout the weekend until Cyber Monday, a similar massive shopping day, but through the Internet, which occurs the following Monday.
Black Friday is one of the few cheapest days of the year, with offers, promotions or payment facilities on mobile devices, electronic devices, computers, shoes, clothing, toys and other products.
The Influence of Black Friday in Mexico
In Mexico, there is a similar day called Buen Fin, which occurs earlier. The influence of Black Friday in the United States is so powerful that mexicans have adopted a buying and selling model that resembles Buen Fin, which this year will begin on Friday, November 15th and end on Monday, November 18th, two weeks before its American counterpart.
This weekend of massive purchases was created by the Government of Mexico and private initiative in 2011, with the aim of reactivating the Mexican economy and encouraging consumption at affordable prices.
