Gelson’s announced Tuesday that it has promoted chief operating officer John Bagan to the role of president. In the new role, Bagan will take on more strategic management of the company, according to Gelson’s. Bagan joined Gelson’s as chief merchandising officer in 2016 and got promoted to COO in May 2021. Previously, Bagan held high-level merchandising roles at Guitar Center and Albertsons. In a move that will strengthen its presence across Southern California, Superior Grocers announced that it has acquired Numero Uno, an independent chain of 22 Hispanic retail grocery stores. The reopening comes after some time of closure The Tops store on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo, NY, has been closed since the horrific tragedy on May 14 that killed 10 people, and injured 3. Todd Vasos, who was instrumental in helping the Dollar General Corp. grow into the largest retailer by store count in the United States, will retire as CEO effective Nov. 1. The Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based retailer said on Tuesday that its board of directors has approved the promotion of Jeffery Owen, COO since 2019, to succeed Vasos as CEO immediately following his retirement. The Giant Co., which recently celebrated the opening of a new store in Richboro, Pennsylvania, has named Ted Williams as director of nonfoods. In his new role, Williams will oversee all areas of health and personal care, seasonal, general merchandise, pet supplies, candy, and baby. He will report to Parag Shah, VP of center store omnichannel merchandising. Lyndhurst, New Jersey-based specialty grocer HMart will open two new stores this month—one in the Aloha State and the other in the Bay State, according to HMart’s website. The chain, established in New York in 1982 as Han Ah Reum (a Korean phrase meaning “arm full of groceries”), said its newest locations will bein Pearl City, Hawaii, and Quincy, Massachusetts. HMart said the Pearl City location is set to open July 22 at 850 Kamehameha Highway. U.S. employers added 372,000 jobs in June, higher than economists’ estimates of 250,000 to 270,000, and the unemployment rate again held steady at 3.6%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. However, the labor force participation rate reversed course, ticking back down 0.1 percentage point to 62.2%. Food and beverage stores added 6,100 jobs during the month after shedding 8,300 jobs in May. Supercenters and warehouse clubs, after giving up nearly 28,000 jobs in May, lost 5,200 jobs in June. Keasbey, N.J.-based Wakefern Food Corp., the largest retailer-owned grocery cooperative in the U.S., announced a slew of leadership changes following last month’s news of former EVP Chris Lane’s resignation from the company.
