    2025 Report: U.S. Supermarket Sales Overview

    [United States — 2025] – The U.S. grocery retail sector has shown steady performance in 2025, with traditional supermarket sales maintaining stability and eGrocery channels experiencing significant growth.

     

    1. Overall Retail Food Sector Performance

    In June 2025, total U.S. retail and food service sales reached $720.1 billion, up 0.6% from the previous month and 3.9% compared to June 2024 (census.gov).

    Sales at grocery stores have remained steady, ranging between $75.5–$76.0 billion per month since the beginning of the year (fred.stlouisfed.org, ycharts.com).

    2. Leading Supermarket Chains & Trends

    Albertsons

    • Same-store sales: +2.8% in the quarter ended June 14.

    • Digital sales growth: +25%.

    • Annual outlook revised upward: +2% to +2.75%.

    Kroger

    • Same-store sales (ex. fuel): +3.2% in the latest quarter.

    • Annual projection revised to +2.25% to +3.25%.

    • Strategic store optimization: closing 60 stores, opening 30 new locations.

    Costco

    • July sales (month ending August 3): $20.89 billion, up 8.5% year-over-year.

    • E-commerce growth: +15.1%; same-store sales: +6.4%.


    3. eGrocery Surge

    • May 2025: Online grocery sales reached $8.7 billion (+27% YoY).

    • June 2025: $9.8 billion (+27.3% YoY).

      • Delivery: +29% (~$3.8B)

      • Pickup: +25% (~$4.3B)

      • Ship-to-Home: +33% (~$1.7B)

    Industry projections indicate eGrocery will represent 17% of total grocery sales by the end of the decade, accounting for nearly half of the sector’s dollar growth.

    • Increased focus on price and convenience.

    • Growing preference for private-label brands.

    • Higher demand for promotions and discounts.

    • Reduced spending on non-essential products.


    5. Hispanic Supermarkets: Growth & Challenges

    • In the Mid-Atlantic region (Baltimore–Washington, Richmond, parts of Pennsylvania, Delmarva Peninsula), the number of large-format Hispanic supermarkets grew from 38 (in 2009) to 111 in 2024, generating an estimated $1.74 billion in annual sales.

      • Cermak Fresh Market

      • Cardenas Markets

      • El Rancho Supermercado

    • Hispanic consumer profile:

      • Estimated purchasing power: $2.8 trillion.

      • Strong preference for fresh and traditional products.

      • 29% regularly buy groceries online.

      • 80% use grocery shopping apps.

      • 79% participate in loyalty programs.

    • 2025 Challenges:

      • 11% decline in in-store Hispanic grocery shopping (Kantar / Investopedia).

      • Sociopolitical climate: immigration enforcement actions have contributed to a 4.3% drop in food and beverage sales in Q1, alongside increases in delivery and pickup orders.
